KARACHI - The activists of a student union on Tuesday thrashed four teachers of DJ Sindh Government Science College.
Manhandling of the teachers has caused not only the suspension of HSC examinations, which was scheduled to be held in the second shift at the DJ College, but also annoyed the teachers’ community.
The police have lodged an FIR against the members of a students’ outfit, while the teachers were given first aid at the Civil Hospital Karachi. Police had arrested two activists including Waqas, while others managed to escape from the scene.
Principal DJ Science College Hakimullah Baig Chughtai told The Nation that the college’s four teachers including Shehzad Muslim (Physics), Mehmood (Computer Science), Irfan (Urdu), Dr Mujeeb Ahmed (Mathematics), had been maltreated at the hands of the members of a student union in the college premises. However, he said, the condition of Shehzad Muslim (Physics), Mehmood (Computer Science) are serious.
“These teachers, who were busy in an official meeting, wanted to rescue a student who was being thrashed by the same people. Their rescue efforts provided a chance to the activists to manhandle them, as the members of the outfit were already furious over the restrictions imposed by the college administration over the political activities in the college premises. Some miscreants were gathered at the college from SM Arts College, which has become the safe haven for the said outfit,” he added.
On the other hand, the college unit of Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) has boycotted the HSC exam in the college and took strict notice of the teachers’ mishandling.
General Secretary SPLA Karachi Prof Iftikhar Azmi has condemned the incident and demanded the authority concerned to arrest all the culprits who were involved in the incident. Educational institutions should be cleared from all type of political and criminal activities, while the student unions were the only solution to knock down student political wings, he added.
Two students held
Aram Bagh Police Tuesday arrested two activists of Islami Jamiat-e-Taliba (IJT) and registered a case against them for beating the DJ Science College teachers up.
Police officials said that students of DJ science collage Contacted the police help line 15 and police immediate rushed to the scene and controlled the situation. He said the students arrested were later identified Waqas and Mazhar.
